This past Friday, we were finally ready to sign off on a rucksack that we’ve been working on for 13 years, aka Monster’s whole life. He was sitting under the table on his bed at Scars, never far from the action (or Christian’s treat bags). We approved the final sample, celebrated a quiet win, and moved onto the next task. That’s when Angel came around the corner and said Monster had fallen on his way outside and couldn’t get back up. No matter how ready you are, it always comes too soon. Monster passed the next day at home, surrounded by our family and all the love in our hearts.

Monster loved serving as your President of GORUCK Nation and he loved you all with his whole heart. Thank you for loving him back with yours.

Next steps are never easy and the grief comes in waves — but there are no coincidences in the universe. The rucksack we approved together on the last full day of his life is now and forever called GR MONSTER. Emily and I both used it for a week on the John Muir Trail in California, and when we were going to see Oasis in Scotland last summer, I used it there, too, all around Edinburgh. It slimmed down enough that they even let me wear it in the Scottish National Gallery of Art - surrounded by other works of beauty.

It’s a dayruck, a hiking pack, you can strip it down to the essentials or add enough accessories to live out of it basically forever. It’s tough and beautiful, like Monster.

This will be the first run, marked with a special internal label, and it’s a pre-order. The patch it comes with is exclusive to the GR MONSTER, and at a deeply personal level, I’m always looking for more meaning out of the things in my life, or else they’re just things. The WWII-era M1945 field pack inspired our M Series (M22-24). For the M26, we took the crowd favorite M23—the top load, exterior pockets, front buckles, and bombproof laptop compartment—and shared some initial ideas for modifications with our favorite group of gear dorks (said with love!) on the GORUCK Subreddit. Hundreds of comments, suggestions and DM’s later, based on YOUR feedback which we never could have done ourselves, we finalized the design. This is the first time we’ve ever done anything like this, and we loved the process and are GRATEFUL for the input. Here’s where we landed for M26:

• Lid QAP: Brand new Quick Access Pocket in the lid with a rain flap and an internal mesh organizing pocket. The volume for this is in the lid itself, not the main cavity. This means when you’re on the move you can access it … QUICK!
• Side Zip Volume Pockets: Two side zip pockets, one with stretch woven elastic (ideal for a water bottle) and one with 420D ROBIC Ripstop Nylon. The volume on these is internal to the ruck, so they do not stick out - this is an elegant solution to carrying a water bottle and more. Stretch organization pockets will remain on one of the pockets, as it was in the M23 (by serious request, too!)
• Main Compartment: The zipper into the main cavity is extended for better access without opening up the drawstring closure (the zipper is even longer than shown in the rendering).
• Zippers: No AquaGuard. We’ll use the burliest, best YKK zippers money can buy — across the board. Rain flaps will cover them (not pictured).
• Materials: Two variations. 500D CORDURA (featuring a black metal patch) and Heritage Waxed Canvas (featuring an embossed full grain leather patch and top carrying handle). Back panels of both are built with the same fabric, and shoulder straps have MOLLE webbing for a classic GORUCK look. Note: the shroud under the lid will be color matched on the CORDURA versions. Coyote on the Waxed Canvas.
• Bombproof Laptop Compartment: A 16” Macbook will fit in both versions, the 21L and the 26L.
• Surprise Commemorative Patch: Details not forthcoming at this time (also because we haven’t designed it yet. It will be badass and one of a kind as a THANK YOU to all who have contributed to this process).

Hip Carry for Long Rucks + Heavy Loads

The ability to shift the weight around different parts of the body can be a lifesaver on a long ruck. The Padded Hip Belt allows you to rest more of your ruck’s weight on your hips with the added comfort of hip padding. When rucking significant distances or time (like at a GORUCK event), having a Padded Hip Belt lets you give your shoulders a break from time to time.

A padded stabilizer belt pulls the bottom of your rucksack inward around your hips or belly and keeps it in place, minimizing side-to-side sway and stabilizing the load on your back. With 210 HT CORDURA on the underside of the hip belt, you don’t have to worry about irritation on the skin or damage to clothing. That means no friction burn and longer, more powerful rucks.

Add a Carabiner to secure your Padded Hip Belt when not in use (so it doesn't flop around).

NOTE: Hip Belts are compatible with side MOLLE webbing on rucks: Rucker, GR1, GR2.
Rucks without Side MOLLE webbing: GR3, Ruck Plate Carrier, Bullet are not compatible.

T-REX Hand Straps | Stop the Swell

The Problem: Gravity Always Wins. Ruck long enough with enough weight, and physics takes its toll. Blood pools in your hands, leading to sausage fingers and swollen hands.

The Solution: The T-REX Position. The apex predator of all the dinosaurs naturally carried its arms high, increasing blood flow back to the heart. This is smart. The take-away for all of us is that elevating our hands keeps them working better longer so the hunt (for miles) continues strong.

Nobody likes having all of the things in their pockets bouncing around while they are rucking. It just isn’t comfortable.

The Sternum Pouch is a simple way to keep your phone, keys, credit card, and ID organized while you're on the go. It easily slides onto your sternum strap or hip belt or through your pants belt, providing quick access while rucking.

Special Forces Flight Bag

The Aviator’s Kit Bag is used on all Airborne flight operations (jumping out of planes or helos). Special Forces and other units started using the Aviator’s Kit Bags as travel bags, pilot flight bags, and deployment bags because of the large opening at the top, which is plenty big enough to comfortably allow body armor to fit inside.

Our Kit Bags are inspired by classic aviator's kit bags, which are also used by Special Forces teams to transport a small army’s worth of gear (per person). We've modernized the aviator's kit bag and added functionality not for jumping out of airplanes, but for daily use, travel, and storage.

Source hydration systems have not only undergone GORUCK Challenges; they have been tried, tested, and recommended by Special Forces soldiers in war. They are tough, easy to clean, and perfectly compatible with our rucksacks. This is our choice for hydration on the move.

Adjustable Weight Distribution

When you hear that click sound, that means it's getting serious. Engage your sternum strap to disperse heavy loads and help transfer the weight forward on your body while rucking.

Keeps your rucksack secure without constricting breath or movement and is adjustable by the MOLLE on the straps. Example: While doing burpees, you may want it a little tighter. While on the move, a little looser. Easy adjustment, on the fly.

While rucks are made to be worn high on the back, Training Sternum Straps can provide reduced jarring and tumbling of your rucksack. Adding a Training Sternum Strap can also change the way weight is dispersed across your chest and shoulders. This added line across the body allows for a quick carabiner clip-in point, too.

Removable and adjustable, Training Sternum Straps attach via clasps to the MOLLE webbing on the shoulder straps of a rucksack for additional stabilization.
